Duin en Kruidberg - Nature

The Duin en Kruidberg nature area near Santpoort-Noord is one of the most varied parts of Zuid-Kennemerland National Park. Here you can walk through old estate woodlands, stately avenues, open dunes, damp dune valleys and extensive grasslands. It is a beautiful area for anyone who wants to combine peace, nature and history.

What can you expect in Duin en Kruidberg?

• Varied dune landscape: Duin en Kruidberg consists of a special mix of woodlands, shifting dunes, sandy paths, dune grasslands and wet valleys. As a result, every walk feels different.
• Historic country estate atmosphere: The area was once part of a large estate owned by wealthy Amsterdam merchants. The old beech and chestnut avenues, stately trees and historic structures still recall this estate history.
• Special plants and animals: In the damp dune valleys, plants such as grass-of-Parnassus, gentians and centaury grow. Many birds, butterflies and insects also live here. With a bit of luck, you may spot fallow deer, foxes, Konik horses or Scottish Highland cattle along the way.
• Walking through woodland and dunes: The marked walking routes lead through old woodlands, across open dunes and past beautiful viewpoints. If you choose a longer route, you can even walk towards the beach and the Kennemerstrand.
• Nature in every season: In spring, stinzen plants bloom along the old avenues, in summer the dune valleys are rich in flowers and insects, while autumn gives the woodland warm colours. Even in winter, the area is wonderful for a peaceful walk.
• Part of Natura 2000: Duin en Kruidberg forms part of the protected Natura 2000 area of Zuid-Kennemerland National Park. The park is one of the most species-rich nature areas in the Netherlands.

Duin en Kruidberg is ideal for walkers, nature lovers and photographers. Thanks to the combination of estate woodlands, open dunes and wet valleys, the area is surprisingly varied. The peace, space and chance of seeing wild animals make a walk here extra special.

Practical information

• Location: The main entrance is on Duin- en Kruidbergerweg 74 in Santpoort-Noord. From Santpoort-Noord station, it is about a 10-minute walk to the entrance.
• Parking: Paid parking is available at the entrance on Duin- en Kruidbergerweg. Members of Natuurmonumenten can park here free of charge by scanning their membership card.
• Opening times: The nature area is accessible daily from sunrise to sunset.
• Access: Access to Duin en Kruidberg is free.
• Accessibility: Bear in mind that there are unpaved paths, height differences and sections of loose sand. The main paths are reasonably accessible, but not suitable everywhere for pushchairs or wheelchairs.
• Cycling and dogs: Cycling is only allowed on the designated cycle paths. Dogs are not allowed in this part of the nature area.

Duin en Kruidberg is a beautiful starting point for a relaxed discovery tour through Zuid-Kennemerland National Park, with plenty of nature, history and lovely walking opportunities.
