Kennemerduinen - Nature

The Kennemerduinen nature area forms the largest and best-known part of Zuid-Kennemerland National Park. This extensive dune area lies between Zandvoort, Bloemendaal, Overveen, Santpoort and IJmuiden and is one of the most beautiful continuous dune landscapes in the Netherlands.
What can you expect in the Kennemerduinen?
- Varied dune landscape: The Kennemerduinen consist of high dunes, open sandy plains, woodlands, dune lakes, wet dune valleys and wide beaches. As a result, every walk feels different.
- Walking and cycling: Many walking and cycling paths run through the area. From the dune tops, you have wonderful views over the dunes, the North Sea and, in clear weather, even towards Haarlem and Amsterdam.
- Special wildlife: The area is home to Scottish Highland cattle, Konik horses, fallow deer, foxes, rabbits and sand lizards, among others. The impressive European bison also lives in Zuid-Kennemerland National Park, in the Kraansvlak.
- Birds and dune lakes: Around the dune lakes and wet valleys, you can see many birds. These include spoonbills, cormorants, bluethroats and various birds of prey. For nature lovers and birdwatchers, this is a particularly rich area.
- Rich nature: A large proportion of Dutch plant and animal species can be found in Zuid-Kennemerland National Park. It is precisely the combination of sea, dunes, woodland and open valleys that makes the area so ecologically valuable.
- Fun for families: At the De Kennemerduinen visitor centre, near the Koevlak entrance, several short walking routes begin. Nearby, you will also find a natural play area, picnic spots and routes that are well suited to children.
- Viewpoints and peace: Along the way, you pass quiet dune valleys, open viewpoints and winding paths through the woods. The area is large enough to find peaceful places even on busy days.
